NATURE

• Monte Arbu and the Sette Fratelli granites:

strangely shaped granite rocks, centuries-old holm-oaks, Mediterranean plants, Sardinian deer, views on the Gulf.

ARKEO

• Near the Spiaggia del Riso there is a domus de janas ("home of the fairies"): it is a tomb dug in the rock, dating back to the Neolithic Age (3000 B.C.).

• Near Giardone there is a tomb of the Giants. These were Nuraghic collective tombs (1500 B.C.).

• Near Trajas there is a Roman necropolis: five tombs with several buried objects.

• In the S. Maria area there is a Roman thermal complex.

• 5 km from the town, the conical tower of Capo Boi and Fortezza Vecchia (XVIIth century) overlook the granite headland of Capo Carbonara.

TERRITORY

• The area

The commune of Villasimius is 59 sqm. It is in the historical region of Sarrabus, about 49 km from Cagliari.

It is surrounded by the mountains and has 35 km of beaches, islands, little bays and rocks.

The area includes the territories of Villasimius and the neighbouring communes and is characterized by the extraordinary synthesis of sea and mountains.

You can grasp the peculiarity of those places along the coastline from Cagliari to Castiadas: the Sette Fratelli mountains northwest and endless blue and emerald setting southeast.

The domus de janas (small funerary caves dating to neolithic age 6000-3500 BC.), the tombs of the Giants and the Nuraghe Cixilianu bear witness to the fact that man has been living there for thousands of years. The many towers and fortifications along the coast have been built by the Spanish between the XVIth and XVIIth centuries and remind us of old battles and dangers, which once came from the sea.

Visit the conical tower of Capo Boi and the Old Fortress (XVIIth century) -5 km from the village - which overlooks the granite headland of Capo Carbonara.

• The nature

The second Italian Sea Park has been opened in year 2000, after that of Ustica.

It stretches throughout the whole coast-basin of the territory, islands included: it has different areas of control and protection.

Some reserves safeguard the most important depths.

This area of Sardinia is a sort of small and charming peninsula: the undisputed protagonists are the cobalt blue sea and the depths. Lega Ambiente (Environment League) has given the maximum score to the sea of Villasimius.

The fragrances of the Mediterranean plants, the broad creeks, the spotless beaches, the reefs, the underwater environment, the totally uninhabited islands, which are truly virgin and lonely paradises.

The granite rock spikes of the Sarrabus mountains can be observed, far away on the horizon, overlooked by Punta Serpeddì: the latter is particularly interesting for its great variety of flora and fauna. Sardinian deer live here, among luxuriant ilex groves and strangely shaped rocks.
