Belturbet Area Information

Belturbet is on the banks of the noblen River Erne. It is an Angling and Boating centre and a fast growing tourism resort. Course fish abound in the many lakes around and brown trout are available in the Erne. The river can take the tourist to the lovely Erne lake country. The Church of Ireland in Belturbet is 17th century planters' Gothic. On Turbet Island is another of the motes erected by Walter de Lacy in 1211 in the abortive Anglo Norman attempt to gain control of the north.

Belturbet owes its name to Sir Stephen Butler who obtained a Corporation Status from James 1 in 1613. The river can take the Tourist to the lovely Erne Lake country and also by the newly opened Shannon Erne Waterway to the renowned Shannon Waterway. It Offers the visitor the opportunity to absorb the unspoiled Countryside by hiring their own cruiser or availing of the daily waterbus exursions.

Belturbet boasts a variety of friendly welcoming hostelries which play host to regular traditional and popular music and dancing sessions. Locally there are many fine restaurants and the reknowned Slieve Russell Hotel and Country Club is just minutes away.
