Playa Blanca Area Information
PLAYA BLANCA is a former fishing village on the south west tip of Lanzarote that has retained many of its traditional features and much of its original charm.
It enjoys stunning views across the Straits of Bocaina to Fuerteventura and the smaller neighbouring island of Los Labos.
Its informal, relaxed atmosphere focuses on a small harbour - offering a 35-minute ferry service to Fuerteventura at regular hourly intervals - which stands at the mid point of a wide seafront walk stretching eastwards from Punta de Pechiguera under the shadow of the imposing Montana Roja to Las Coloradas Beach at Punta del Papagayo.
There are three local sandy beaches - Playa Flamingo backed by tropical gardens to the west of the harbour, and the small Playa Blanca and the expansive Playa Dorada offering a variety of water sports to its east - with gently shelved, calm waters ideal for bathing.
A collection of sandy coves varying between 100 metres and 400 metres in length form the Papagayo beaches, which are considered to be among the best in the Canary Islands, in an area that is part of the Los Ajaches nature reserve. They provide peace and quiet less then five kilometres away over unmade roads and are popular with naturists, snorkellers and surfers. A launch runs at regular intervals between Playa Blanca and Papagayo.
The Playa Blanca nightlife centres on restaurants, cafes and old-fashioned bars providing low-key entertainment on the sea-facing promenade.
There is a small commercial centre next to the harbour as well as a selection of supermarkets, gift shops and souvenir outlets overlooking the sea or just inland in a partly traffic-free upper street east of the harbour.
Punta de Pechiguera boasts the island’s only lighthouses - a low, older structure and a tall, new one
The Castillo de las Coloradas (“Eagle Tower”) in Punta del Aguila overlooks a new marina next to luxury hotels and modern developments to the east between Playa Blanca and Punta del Papagayo.
Marina Rubicón is an up-market oceanside development, which forms a leisurecraft harbour with 400 berths, designer outlets, restaurants, cafes and bars between the southern resort of Playa Blanca and the Papagayo beaches.
Playa Blanca is located to the south west of Puerto del Carmen (29 kilometres), the airport (34 kilometres) and Arrecife (42 kilometres).
LANZAROTE - the fourth largest and most easterly of the Canaries situated approximately 130 kilometres off the west coast of Africa - is an island of outstanding contrast with a stark natural beauty which merits its status as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Its resorts range from the modern and lively to the peaceful and relaxing.
The busy port town of Arrecife is the island's commercial and administrative centre as well as the location for an international airport. It retains much of its old charm, with palm-lined promenades, a fine beach and two small, historic forts to complement its modern trappings. It is the island's main seaport.
To the north, there is a contrast between Costa Teguise, where the arid, low-lying terrain has been transformed into a cluster of luxury hotels and leisure clubs set alongside a golf course, a marina and a shopping centre, and the ancient capital of San Miguel de Teguise with its wide, cobbled streets and spacious squares brimming with old island culture.
The eastern side is dominated by Puerto del Carmen - with its long, sandy beaches and action-packed nightlife along the Avenida de las Playas - which has engulfed nearby Playa de los Pocillos and Playa de Matagorda. More than 60 per cent of the island's tourists stay in the large resort. The original village lies away from the resort's hustle and bustle to the west of the port.
Playa Blanca in the south of the island remains relatively quiet as it offers a carefree holiday as a family-orientated place with character.
The Lanzarote landscape is varied. It consists of a surreal volcanic inland of rocky proportions centred on Timanfaya National Park - capped by the Montanas de Fuego (Fire Mountains) with their 300 craters - which looks so much like the moon that astronauts have used the area for lunar training and film producers have made space movies there. There are regions of fertile land covered by thick ash, which absorbs dew overnight to retain the moisture needed to grow grapevines for producing wine as well as fig, lettuce, onion, melon and tomato crops. The coastline has superb sandy beaches different in colour and interspersed by bays and coves dissimilar in shape and size.
Lanzarote's approach to tourism has been shaped by local artist and designer Cesar Manrique, whose appreciation of its unique geography is reflected in tight building restrictions with low-rise developments and colour requirements - incorporating white-washed buildings with shutters in the traditional Canarian colours of green or blue - and a ban on large advertising billboards and overhead cables.
The island covers an 850 square kilometre area, running 60 kilometres north to south, and is only 21 kilometres at its widest point. It comprises seven municipalities - Arrecife, Haria, San Bartolome, Teguise, Tias, Tinajo and Yaiza - with the population of 100,000 living mainly in the south-central part of the island. The climate is very mild throughout Lanzarote, and its position on the same latitude as Florida and the western Sahara virtually guarantees year-round sunshine and an average monthly temperature varying from 18*C in winter to 24*C during the summer. The low rainfall means that the island's entire water supply consists of desalinated and treated seawater.
