Chania/Akrotiri Area Information
All our villas are within easy reach of the beautiful beaches on the Akrotiri. On the north and west are; Kalathas, a large sandy beach with the sea shelving gently perfect for families there are sunbeds for rent and a taverna for lunch or a choice of two snack bars. Tersanas is a small sandy bay perfect for families with small children and the water shelves very gently. There is a snack bar and a small traditional Greek taverna situated directly at the waterside. Stavros beach also with sunbeds for rent is the most northerly. This bay lies below the mountain now named after the film, ‘Zorba The Greek’. There is also a small beach found directly beside the Thanasis taverna further round from Stavros. To the south of the Akrotiri are two more beaches. These are the small beach of Loutraki, with sunbeds and a small cantina and Marathi. Here you will also find sunbeds for rent both in the main area and a little further on near the camping area. There are a few bars and some fish tavernas to be found on the water front.
The main town is Kounoupidiana with a variety of shops and supermarkets for your shopping needs. Kounoupidiana has two banks with ATM machines, pharmacies and a selection of restaurants. Mini-markets can be found in Kalathas, Chorafakia, Aroni and Sternes with smaller ones dotted around. There are also two other pharmacies in Sternes and Aroni.
Eating out is still reasonably priced here and there are a good range of places to eat all over the Akrotiri from take away pizza to tavernas and restaurants. The variety encompasses traditional health Cretan cuisine in simple tavernas and fish tavernas all the way to the more cosmopolitan diet. Most use fresh locally grown and reared produce, even to the point of it having been harvested the morning it is cooked.
Apart from the beaches, good places to eat it would be remiss if we did not mention the monastery of Agia Traida (Holy Trinity). This was built in the seventeenth century by two brothers of the Venetian Zangaroli family who became monks when they had converted to the Orthodox faith.
Chania town. Spending time in the lovely old town of Chania is a must. The Old town is built around the Venetian harbour and the narrow winding lanes fanning away from the harbour are full of shops and places to eat and drink. As you wander through the streets be sure to look out for the signs of Chania’s ancient Minoan past. The Venetian city wall can be seen particularly well along Karaoli Dimitriou Street and the best archaeological digs can be found along Kanevaro Street. If you take care you can come across many other digs around that part of the Old Town.
You can while away some time drinking a coffee and watching the world go by or stop for lunch or the evening meal. There are many places to eat in and around the harbour. Take some time to walk a little around the lanes as you will find some small places serving different menus. Learn how to relax and enjoy the company of others.
