Creuse Area Information

Lake Vassivière covers a total of 1000 hectares of water and is one of the largest man-made lakes in France. Supplying France with electrical energy via the Hydroelectric power station run by EDF, the 45km of shoreline provides ample opportunity for a fantastic vacation.

The lake was created in 1949 by flooding the lower valleys and part of an estate owned by the Vassiviere family, however the chateau still stands on the island in the middle of the lake which you can visit, also home to a sculpture park.

Architects Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre created the Vassivière Contemporary Art Centre on the Island in 1986 and in order to preserve its atmosphere, it is a pedestrian-only zone although you can take the tourist train across to the island in season.
