Borovets Area Information
The Rila Mountain is awesome and majestic one: 2925m - the highest point on the Balkan Peninsula belongs to Peak Moussala. The mountain borders with the Verila Mountain, the valley of Samokov, Trakia lowland, Pirin, Rodopi and the valley of the Struma River. The overall territory of Rila spreads on 2396 km2. Rila is well known since ancient times. The Tracians gave it the name of Dunax, which has the same meaning as its Slavonic name : Rila - 'The Water Mountain'. Schists constitute the predominant part of the mountain's rocky structure. In contrast to Pirin the ridges are wider spread. The peaks have an alpine character and some of them are symbols of the Bulgarian alpinism: Maljovitza, Kupenite, Mancho, Haramijata...
There are a lot of hot mineral water springs at the foot of the mountain. They are among the hottest in Europe. The temperature varies from 54 C to 104 C.
The lowest average winter temperature (- 12 C) is registered at Peak Mousala. These temperatures keep snow 253 days a year. The average summer temperature is 5-6C.
Some of biggest rivers in Bulgaria take their sources from Rila such Iskar (368km - the longest in Bulgaria). Water supply of the rivers is constant throughout the year due to the lakes and the melting snow. There are approximately 140 lakes, separated in big groups. Among the most famous and beautiful ones are 'The Seven Rila Lakes', 'Urdini', 'Ribni', 'Maliovishki'. The lakes called 'Marichini' are situated at the foot of Mousala and they give the beginning to the Maritza River, loved and admired by Sylvie Vartan. The Icy Lake is the highest one. It is situated on 2709 m. above the sea level. The biggest of all is 'Smradlivoto' (the Stinky lake) - 21.2 km2. 'Okoto' (The Eye) is the deepest one - 37.5 m.
The highest and the most beautiful waterfall in Rila - 'Skakavitza' (80m) is situated in the The Seven Lakes' area.
The biggest monastery on the peninsula is built in the very heart of the Rila Mountain. St. Ivan Rilski founded it in 10th century. The legend says that his food consisted of only few nuts per day, and he had the divine power to cure diseases. At present, the monastery complex (included in UNESCO's list) is regarded as a masterpiece of the Bulgarian 19th century architecture. The museum, the medieval tower from 1335, the frescos with their marvelous colours complete the capturing beauty of the monastery.

In the midst of the breathtaking Rila Mountains lies the premier Bulgarian ski resort of Borovets. In addition to spectacular skiing, Borovets has a lively apres-ski with bustling bars and a wide variety of restaurants and evening entertainment.
