Ibiza's reputation as the world's clubbing capital means its many other qualities are usually overlooked: the rustic Mediterranean charm of the countryside; rural fincas nestled amidst orange and lemon groves; hidden bays backed by pine forests; and markets selling local arts and crafts.
You could spend your entire holiday partying and then recovering on the beach - but you could just as easily enjoy it without ever setting eyes on a nightclub.
There are far too many beaches to mention, spread right around the coastline, and thanks to Ibiza's compact size (about 45km long and 25km wide) you're never more than an hour's drive from anywhere else.
Inland there are countless pretty villages to explore and grab some authentic tapas, such as Santa Ines, San Carlos, San Miguel, San Rafael and San Juan.
If you're heading for the clubs you'll find the most extravagant ones in Ibiza Town ('Eivissa'), the capital on the southeast coast, and Sant Antoni to the West. Ibiza's third major town is Santa Eulalia, which is geared more towards families.
Ibiza Town's historic centre has a Bohemian past which gives it an arty atmosphere, having attracted creative types seeking alternative lifestyles since the early 20th century. It's home to boutique shops, galleries, a 14th century cathedral, and the ancient Puig des Molins necropolis.
Out of town activities include karting, quad-biking, diving, snorkelling and wakeboarding – or for a more relaxed trip there are the 'hippy' markets of Es Canar (Wednesdays) on the east coast and Las Dalias in San Carlos (Saturdays).
All in all, Ibiza's appeal is much wider than most people realise, whether you want to dance until sunrise or simply enjoy a quiet glass of wine watching some of the Mediterranean's most breathtaking sunsets.
