If you're seeking a peaceful mountain retreat, the Midi Pyrénées makes the perfect holiday spot.
It covers a large inland region of the south of France, with the Pyrénées mountains forming its southern border where France meets Spain.
It's far less developed than the Alps, and attracts walkers and cyclists who can enjoy miles of untouched landscapes, passing streams and woodlands, mountains and forests. Another way to enjoy the countryside is to take a ride on a slow barge along the UNESCO-listed Canal du Midi, or a boat trip along the pretty River Lot.
Most of the region's population is concentrated in its largest city, Toulouse, known as the 'Ville Rose' for its distinctive red brick architecture. It's one of the most 'alternative' cities in France, and holds a number of interesting sights such as the impressive façade of the Capitole theatre; old mansions such as the Hôtel d'Assézat; and the 16th century Pont-Neuf bridge across the Garonne. Toulouse also has a large number of students who attend one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1229.
Cahors is a popular tourist town with a wonderful medieval quarter and the unique 14th century Valentré Bridge crossing the Lot river. The town's Cathédrale Saint-Étienne is a national monument. Other interesting towns include Albi, Lectoure and Montauban, each offering something unique.
For total relaxation, there are spa towns such as Bagnères-de-Luchon lying in the foothills of the Pyrénées. Used since Roman times, the resort's thermal waters are said to have curative properties.
