Picardie in northern France is most famous for its many bloody battlegrounds, but is also home to wonderfully intact medieval villages, Gothic cathedrals and gentle countryside.
In fact a number of the key towns, including Amiens, Beauvais and Laon, have impressive Gothic cathedrals, the finest of which is at Amiens, the region's capital. This 13th century cathedral has been granted World Heritage Site status. The town is also known for its distinctive 'hortillonnages' - gardens created on tiny islands in the marshland along the Somme River, surrounded by a network of canals.
The Somme area around Amiens is famous as the site of many World War I battles, and is home to numerous military cemeteries and major war monuments commemorating the soldiers who died on its battlefields. The Battle of the Somme itself was one of the bloodiest battles ever recorded, with more than 1.5 million casualties.
Older battles also took place in the region: the village of Crécy-en-Ponthieu is just a stone's throw from the Hundreds Years War battleground, where the English and the French fought in 1346. Edward III is reputed to have watched the battle from the safety of a famous mill, where today a tower allows visitors to survey the battleground as he would have done. Crécy also has a beautiful 4300-hectare forest to explore, crossed by scenic roads and with game such as pheasants, roe deer and wild boar to spot.
The countryside is also full of picturesque villages. The most famous of these is Gerberoy, a medieval treasure of 12th century timber-framed houses and cobbled streets, which is said to be amongst the top 100 most beautiful villages in the whole of France.
