Aquitaine is one of the 26 regions of France, located in the far south west of the country. The Romans named this region Aquitaine, or 'land of water', after its Atlantic coastline, freshwater lakes, and three great rivers.
Water still dominates the region, but amongst tourists it is the coast alone that really draws the crowds. There are a handful of highly sought-after resorts, such as Arcachon, Biarritz, Cap Ferret, Hossegor, Soulac and St Jean de Luz – but beyond those you can easily find deserted stretches of coastline.
The Côte d'Argent is a 200km-long stretch of coastline from the mouth of the Gironde estuary to Biarritz, which represents the longest, straightest strip of sand in Europe. The sweeping beaches, popular with surfers, are backed by high sand dunes, behind which lies the largest forest in western Europe, Les Landes.
Bordeaux, the region's capital, is famous for being one of the world's most important wine industry centres, but it also has more protected buildings than any other French city except Paris. It is included on UNESCo's World Heritage List for being "an oustanding urban and architectural ensemble, created in the age of Enlightenment", boasting many intact historic buildings and spaces created in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Other major cities in Aquitaine include Pau, Bayonne, Mont-de-Marsan, Biarritz, Bergerac, and Périgueux.
The more adventurous can also enjoy a taste of Spain by taking a day trip over the border to San Sabastian, Pamplona or Bilbao.
