This stunningly beautiful region of still lakes, fast flowing streams, gentle rolling valleys and forested mountains has been one of the best kept secrets in France. From the lovely old city of Limoges to the tiny hamlets scattered across the hills and forests, and the pure rivers and lakes, discover the friendliness and old world charm of one of the last remaining havens of the "real France"
Whether you want to ride the white water rapids, swim in the still lakes, immerse yourself in the Limousin's diverse culture, discover the plethora of wildlife, trek the thousands of kilometres of country trails or just totally relax and rediscover the true nature of peace and tranquility, then the Limousin is for you . . . . . . . . . .
350 Kilometres south of Paris, the Limousin region is the traditional heartland of France. The region is made up of three departments - La Creuse (23) to the east, Haute Vienne (87) to the west, and Correze (19) to the south.
As one of the lowest populated regions in France, the Limousin has largely escaped the onward march of "progress" and retains some of the most unspoilt countryside in Europe.
A land of contrasts, from the gently rolling countryside of the Haute Vienne to the rugged terrain of the Ambazac hills, the Limousin countryside has witnessed over 2000 years of history. The ancient landscape where Neanderthal man once roamed gave shelter to the Romans and, later, Richard the Lionheart. The moorlands, purple with heather, inspired Monet and the impressionist painters. The magnificent tapestries of Aubusson, the world famous porcelain of Limoges, the resting place of Richard the Lionheart, the ancient Pilgrim route of St. Jacques de Compostella, and the architecture of a region which gave birth to the masons who built Notre Dame and the Louvre. The Limousin is living history.......
The Limousin is also known as 'the land of a thousand lakes' and wherever you are in the region there will be one close by. Most are bathing lakes with clear, clean water and often with sandy beaches.
From Limoges, the capital city of the Limousin, to the thousands of tiny hamlets dotted around the landscape, there are a rich variety of villages - many classified as the most beautiful villages in France. The great advantage is that they are much less affected by tourism than many other parts of France. Here you will find beautiful architecture, streetside cafes and bars, parks, and all of those indefinable things that make you fall in love with rural France - and most important of all - the warm welcome of the Limousin people.
