Just across the channel from England, Normandy gets its name from the Norman Vikings who arrived and settled there in the 10th century.
It's most famous for its World War II landing beaches, having witnessed many battles and the D-Day landings, and monuments and museums such as the Caen Memorial Museum depict these historic events for visitors.
The region's capital, Rouen, was one of the most prosperous cities in medieval Europe, and still has many surviving half-timbered buildings. Its most famous landmark is the Notre Dame cathedral, painted many times by Claude Monet.
Other tourist attractions include the pretty harbour of Honfleur; Claude Monet's famed gardens in Giverny; the Bayeux Tapestry in Bagnoles-de-l'Orne;; and the world-famous Mont Saint-Michel abbey, on an islet which gets cut-off by the incoming tide. Caen, founded by William the Conqueror, has a feudal castle and gardens, Benedictine abbeys, the Museum of Normandy, and the Museum for Peace (commemorating World War II).
Normandy has about 560km of incredibly varied coastline and equally diverse resorts: you can find dunes at Carteret, cliffs at Etretat, a great family beach at St-Germain-sur-Ay, Victorian villas at Houlgate, seafood restaurants at Trouville, and rugged headlands around Cap de la Hague and Baie d’Ecalgrainon on the north-western tip.
Inland, the Seine Valley meanders in and out of woodlands and chalk cliffs, and the landscapes mix lush meadows and orchards with villages showing off the classic Norman half-timbered houses.
By the time you've seen even a fraction of what Normandy has to offer, you'll have worked up quite an appetite -- which you can satisfy with some of the region's traditional delicacies: pastries, foie gras, cheeses and patés, washed down with some local cider or apple brandy.
