Golf Holidays Portugal
Portugal has developed into a golfer’s paradise. Over the last 30 years the Algarve has become one of the most popular golf destinations in Europe with its beautiful scenery and warm climate. The main golf season runs from late autumn to late spring with warm winter months providing a welcome relief to visitors from Northern Europe.
It was the great Sir Henry Cotton who first put Portugal Golf on the map when he designed Penina, the first golf course in Portugal, in 1966. The course, now known as the Meridian Penina Golf & Resort, has since hosted the Portuguese Open Championships five times. Like many of the fantastic golf courses, it is based along the Southern-most coastline in the Algarve. In recent years this has seen the emergence of 35 high quality courses along the Algarve coast designed by some of the greatest golfers and architects in the world.
But don’t be mistaken into thinking that the Algarve is the only place you can enjoy fine golf in Portugal. The country also boasts five 18 hole golf courses in the North of the country, two golf courses in the Central Mountains, and 16 golf courses in the Lisbon area.
