Italy offers an enormous amount of variety, with both its character and landscapes changing dramatically as you travel north to south. Cities such as Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples compete with beautiful rural destinations such as Tuscany and Umbria, or the seaside resorts around Sorrento and the spectacular Amalfi coast.

In the north, the crisp air and craggy peaks of the Dolomites attract outdoor enthusiasts and nature-lovers, while the romantic city of Venice is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with its dense network of canals lined with grand palaces.

Towards Italy's centre, Tuscany's colourful landscape rivals city attractions such as Renaissance Florence, the leaning tower of Pisa and historical Siena. Umbria, 'the green heart of Italy', has a similarly beautiful landscape, with tourists flocking to peaceful Perugia, Assisi, and Spoleto. Neighbouring Le March is less discovered, its sandy beaches more popular with Italians than foreigners, and Renaissance towns like Urbino still pleasantly uncrowded.

Heading south is Lazio, home to the capital, Rome, which has an enviable number of historical sights spanning more than 2500 years - from Ancient Roman monuments such as the Colosseum to later Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

In southern Italy, Campania includes the hectic city of Naples, the gorgeous Amalfi Coast on the Sorrentine Peninsula, Mount Vesuvius and the exclusive island of Capri. In the far 'toe' of Italy is Calabria, a narrow peninsula pointing into the Mediterranean, known for its coastline, medieval towns and Norman castles - and the dramatic town of Tropea with its unusual cliffside dwellings.

Despite Italy's regional differences, across the country the people have an infectious passion for life, food and socialising – the perfect holiday culture!
