Calabria

Italy's sun-baked deep south is the 'toe' that kicks out into the Mediterranean Sea towards Sicily. It's virtually undiscovered by most foreigners, yet has some of Italy's finest beach destinations.
With coastline on three sides, Calabria has had a turbulent past, invaded by the Greeks, Goths, Byzantines, Lombards, Saracens and Normans. As a result it's steeped in history, with Norman castles, medieval towns and many different cultural influences. Greek settlers have left their mark mainly along the Ionian coastline, in the area's cuisine and the whitewashed style of the local houses.
Miles of sandy beaches and rocky coves climb steeply to rugged mountains where olive groves and fig trees grow, then higher up still you even find a ski resort at Gambarie.
The Sila and Aspromonte National Parks dominate inland areas, made up of dense forests, lakes and tiny villages. Many of the more remote mountain hamlets have now been abandoned, but those that are still inhabited appear to be stuck in a time warp, showing off age-old traditions.
The regional capital is the ancient city of Catanzaro, which rises to a peak that's carved in two by the steep Fiumarella valley. The two sides of the city are connected by a huge bridge (the Viadotto Morandi), one of Europe's highest, and sights include the cathedral, the remains of the Norman Castle, the 15th century Palazzo de' Nobili and several interesting old churches.
Elsewhere, there's the town of Gerace, with its intact medieval centre, Norman Castle and Byzantine church; great views from the town of Scilla; and dramatic cliff-dwellings in Tropea.
