The National Nature Reserve of the Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World heritage site and a unique geographical area of miniature peninsulas and bays, inhabited by villagers and farmers who cultivate the steep terraces down to the sea. Vernazza is probably the most picturesque of the five fishing villages in this reserve, with colourful houses perched precariously on the rocky outcrop, and an ancient castle right at its tip.
World-famous beaches stretch along the Riviera di Ponente coastline, including sheltered Alassio, one of the best-known beach resorts, with a 4km-long stretch of sandy beach. The prestigious crescent-shaped town of Portofino attracts the rich and famous to its yachting marina, elegant hotels and local 'Paraggi' beach. And the mild climate in Sanremo has allowed the fashionable town to grow tropical and Mediterranean plants and flowers that have earned it the nickname 'city of flowers'. Genoa, the region's capital, is famous for its splendid palaces, forts and Old Port, and for the 'Levante Genovese' area of beaches, convents and elegant villas.
It's easy to see why Liguria is so popular: sweeping cliff views, turquoise waters, fashionable resorts and a mild climate form the perfect holiday package.
