Sardinia is a large, mountainous, nature-lover's island which belongs to Italy, lying off its west coast in the Mediterranean Sea. Volcanic craters, craggy cliffs, gorges and caves make up the rugged landscape, as do ancient oak forests and immaculate beaches.
The most mountainous province of all is Ogliastra, which is also the least populous province in Italy, offering peaceful, uncrowded landscapes.
The north-eastern Costa Smeralda between Olbia and Santa Teresa Gallura is the most popular and developed stretch of coastline, with about 80 bays packed into a 55km-long stretch. Some of the top beaches include Liscia Ruia, Cappriccioli and Romazzino. Other coastlines are more remote and unspoilt, with many beaches and coves accessed along rough tracks.
Back from the coast you can stumble upon Bronze Age remains, the best known being the Nuraghe, which are distinctive, circular or conical stone dwellings. These nuraghe are scattered across the island, but the best place to see them is at the impressive Su Nuraxi di Barumini complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating to the 2nd millennium BC during the Bronze Age, nothing like these structures exist elsewhere in the world.
The main town is Cagliari, situated among salt marshes in the south of the island with a harbour and the beach of Poetto just 5km away.
There are diving schools at Villasimius and Torre delle Stelle if you want to explore the coastline's underwater treasures, and foodies will savour the local food and wine, with endless varieties of Sardinian Pecorino cheese to try, or local delicacies such as smoked mullet caviar.
