Trapani

Trapani is a rare gem in Sicily in that it’s one of the few places in the Mediterranean whose character and culture has remained unspoilt by the marauding hordes of tourists which can be witnessed when you book holiday accommodation in Trapani. The city is also the capital of the Trapani province, which is littered with amazing beaches and offshore islands, historic monasteries, hilltop medieval villages, Roman amphitheatres, Greek temples and thermal baths. The cuisine of the region is unique in Italy and owes a lot to the ancient trade routes that brought spices from the Middle East, and makes use of fresh fish, local olives and vegetables, fresh pasta and cous-cous to delight your tastebuds. For desert there’s the variety of indigenous fruits fresh from the tree or field and cakes and treats such as the sweet-Ricotta filled Cannoli. End your perfect meal with a glass or two of the world famous and locally produced Marsala wine.

The ancient name of Trapani was Drépanon or Drepana, Greek for "sickle", because of the shape of its curved harbour that extends out into the sea. The city’s fortunes have relied on the sea for centuries in the form of both fishing and salt production. Tuna fishing is a local specialty and there are still several active salt mills with acres of pans producing salt along what is called the ‘Via del Sale’. Wine, Coral, and Marble are also important local resources. Originally built as a port for the town of Erice (Eryx) on top of the nearby Monte Giuliano, Trapani is over 2,400 years old and is a great base from which to explore the region and western Sicily as a whole. You’ll be following in the footsteps of the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Phoenicians, Spanish and the British who over the centuries have all invaded and taken control because of the city’s pivotal position in the Mediterranean. Each have left behind physical signs of their culture in the form of some of the best preserved Doric temples and amphitheatres in the world (Segesta, Selinunte, Agrigento); medieval castles and villages (Erice); Phoenician mosaics, villas, harbours and preserved shipwrecks (Marsala & Mozia). Unique and idyllic beaches are scattered along the coast (San Vito Lo Capo, Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve, Scopello, Trapani, Marausa Lido, Pizzolungo, Cornino, Custonacci and Marsala) and around the Egadi Islands (Favignana, Levanzo & Marettimo). The majority of  these cultural places and recreational beaches are only a 30-60 minute drive, coach or boat ride from Trapani and can be fully explored at your leisure. The region is well provided for with the free A29 motorway linking it to Palermo and the south west, not to mention relatively frequent coaches and trains. Services increase in frequency during the summer months.

Within the city itself you can find cathedrals and churches dating from the 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th centuries some of which are the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, Chiesa di Santa Maria di Gesu and the magnificent Madonna di Trapani inside the Basilica Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Annunziata. There is a museum of prehistory and a museum dedicated to the story of salt production, the preserved original fish market buildings and the narrow cobbled streets and bars of the older portion of the town are not to be missed. You can also catch cable cars up to Erice from Trapani, not to mention hydrofoils and ferries to the wonderful Egadi Islands, Naples, Barcelona and Africa from the port. During Easter, Trapani offers some amazing street processions that re-enact Christ’s crucifixion and resurrections over four nights (called I Misteri).

The climate warms up in April and begins to get very hot during July and early August. April to June and September to November are superb times to visit as you will have the beaches to yourself. Aside from early April and late November the temperatures are typically hot enough to require you to take a swim to cool down!
