The area around Puerto Lope is steeped in history and there are many archaeological sites very close to the town. Moclin is only 5 kilometres away and is well worth a visit for the scenery and the remains of the fort which stand on the top of the hill. Well worth the climb up the pathway!!!
There are several festivals throughout the year and Holiday Accommodation in Puerto Lope during this time gets booked up quickly. one of these festivals in October celebrates the Pilgrimage of St Christo and is so widely known in Spain that coach loads of people from all over the country descend on Moclin for the day. In the summer, there is also a fiesta that celebrates a time, only a few years ago, when pigs were raised communally and slaughtered in the village square.
There is a fiesta in Puerto Lope on the first weekend in May when a procession starts in the middle of the town and makes it’s way to Montesol where everybody enjoys lunch and drinks and the general festivities. In Alcala la Real which is about 18 kilometres away, there are several Fiestas and Religious Celebrations throughout the year. Overlooking the town is La Mota, an ancient fortress dating from 7th century which is being excavated. Well worth a visit. There are also quite a few musical events which take place in one of the re-structured areas of the fort.
