Destination Highlights

Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands, is renowned for its striking volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches, and unique architecture. The island’s volcanic origin is evident in its vast lava fields, craters, and the Timanfaya National Park, offering a surreal experience. The island enjoys great weather year-round, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking relaxation or adventure.

Accommodation

During my trip, I stayed in 10 hotels, but three stood out to me, each with its own unique selling point. First up is Hotel Fariones – what a fabulous boutique hotel! This is the first 5-star resort in Puerto Del Carmen, perfect for creative guests who appreciate local artists and are looking for a truly luxurious stay. The rooftop terrace is ideal for some peace and quiet, or why not treat yourself to a private yoga session surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens, bursting with vibrant colours? For couples who prefer hiking over being in a busy town, Secrets in Puerto Calero is a hidden gem. This peaceful and untouched resort offers romance, breathtaking seafront views, and plenty of hiking opportunities. Step out into the desert landscape and explore the trails. After an exciting hike, relax and recharge with the preferred club amenities, including private pools, swim-up bars, and access to the circuit spa to soothe those muscles. Lastly, Elba Suites – whether you’re a family, solo traveller, or couple, this place has something for everyone. They do an amazing job of accommodating people with mobility issues, offering a range of accessible facilities. The resort is all on one floor, with family-friendly and adult-only areas, so you can enjoy the perfect balance. The animation team stands out for their dedication to making the kids smile and laugh, no matter the weather! Plus, it’s incredibly accessible for families with prams and wheelchair users, with lifts, ramps, and everything you might need located on one floor.

Local Area

Playa Blanca, located on the southern tip of Lanzarote, is a picturesque coastal town known for its relaxed vibe, stunning beaches, and vibrant waterfront. Its golden sands and crystal-clear waters make it a perfect destination for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. The town offers a variety of restaurants, shops, and bars along its charming promenade, where visitors can enjoy local seafood and refreshing drinks with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Playa Blanca is also a gateway to nearby islands like Fuerteventura, accessible by ferry, adding to its appeal as a tranquil yet lively holiday destination.

Excursions and Trips

I took a trip to Timanfaya National Park, where the landscape was breathtakingly volcanic, with rugged terrains and striking lava fields stretching as far as the eye could see. We even held hot rocks straight from the ground, feeling the intense heat radiate from them. One of the most memorable experiences was watching chickens roasting directly from the volcanic heat, their delicious aroma filling the air as they were served straight to customers. This unique cooking method earned the park a spot on National Geographic’s list of top food destinations.

Food Experience

I ate a lot at all-inclusive buffets, so I didn’t really get a feel for the authentic Canarian food, but I did try a Canarian potato that grows in the volcanic ash. It was smoky and salty, not like our regular spud. I think that was my favourite food on the trip.

Ideal Customers

Each resort centre in Lanzarote offers something unique for every type of customer. Playa Blanca is ideal for families and couples, with numerous resorts offering a flat, easy-to-navigate landscape, making it perfect for those with accessibility needs. On the other hand, Puerto del Carmen is a haven for those who enjoy a lively atmosphere, packed with vibrant Irish bars, making it a top choice for visitors looking for a good time. The area is popular among younger guests who prefer self-catering or bed and breakfast options in small, friendly resorts. However, Puerto del Carmen’s hilly terrain may pose challenges for those with mobility issues.

Best Time to Visit

October is a great time of year to visit as the wind is at its lowest point and the weather isn’t unbearably hot. Plus, it gets you away from the UK’s miserable winter.
